Neon Medusa - The Midnight | Visuals
The Midnight has been one of my favorite bands since I was introduced to the "Retro Synthwave" genre. I had the chance to see them in concert a few months back & the live performance of this song was killer.

It's ironic that I was listening to @corridordigital podcast about After Effects needing to be written from the ground up. The AE file I was working in became cursed and no matter what I did After Effects would just crash after a certain point. No rhyme or reason.
I started off with a main particular & trailing particles emulator. The neon waves are from fractal noise & turbulent displace.
Around 30 seconds in, I added a MIR grid to give some illusion of depth. Added some audio react particles, because why not.
Started a new comp, added a trapcode form element. This is where I was able to use 3d movements, although anytime I added the old elements AE would crash. So I got stuck layering everything.
There's about 18 soundkeys audio react expressions throughout the whole thing. Probably 20 adjustment layers for coloring and the glow fx.
All in all, I'm pretty disappointed with After Effects. I've used Adobe programs since I was 13, but I've never had this many issues before.
